HAMMOND, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A caravan of flag-waving Donald Trump supporters protested outside the home of the mayor of Hammond Saturday in support of a resident who flew a Biden flag containing obscenities in his yard next to a park.

About 50 vehicles were in the caravan driving by Mayor Thomas McDermott's home, some with the same flags that started this whole thing, some shouting obscenities but most just waving.

The car caravan was organized by Evansville resident Dave Wheatley, who drove 300 miles to Hammond.

"We're gonna fight for Roy's constitutional rights because at the end of the day, the First Amendment and our constitutional rights are very important and they must be protected at all costs,” Wheatley told WBBM Newsradio.

McDermott stood on his driveway waving and said he's prepared to fight the issue in court if it comes to that.

"I think it's completely silly. I really do. I'm not testing the First Amendment. I don't want a flag with the F-word flying across the street from a park. If I saw a flag with ‘F Trump’ on it, I would have been the same way,” McDermott told WBBM Newsradio.

This ordeal began when Hammond resident Roy Stephens, a Vietnam veteran, put a flag in his yard reading “F— Biden and F— you for voting for him."

Stephens told WBBM Newsradio he thought the support he received was “fantastic” though he didn't expect it.

“Not at all,” Stephens said.

For now, his flag is down.
