CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Lovell Federal Health Care Center hosted a virtual Veterans Day ceremony Tuesday afternoon.
The program featured remarks from the facility's namesake, retired Navy Captain James A. Lovell.
"There is a strong bond above all who have served our country and grew up in military service," said Lovell.
"That is why I was so honored to have my name attached to the hospital, which carries fellow veterans as well as current service members and their families and that's [also] why I am particularly pleased to be here today, to celebrate the service and sacrifice of all veterans."
Lovell, now 93 years old, explained his Navy career started not far from the North Chicago federal facility in Madison, Wis.
"The time was 1946. World War II was just about over. College was only possible because I managed to obtain a two-year Navy ROTC scholarship."
After graduating from the Naval Academy, he served aboard the USS Shangri-La as a night fighter pilot.
In 1962, he was selected by NASA for its space program.
"I had the rare and wonderful privilege of experiencing four space missions," said Lovell. "They were Gemini 7, Gemini 12, Apollo 8 and of course the Apollo 13, which I'm sure you've all heard."
Lovell said his story is well-known, but explained every veteran has a distinct story.
"Whether you are a veteran, or a future veteran, fellow sailor or soldier, airmen, Marine, Coast Guardsmen, or even a guardian of the new Space Task Force, thank you for your service."
The virtual Veterans Day ceremony was live streamed via Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/lovellfhcc.
Other speakers included Lovell FHCC Director Dr. Robert Buckley and Deputy Director Captain Thomas Nelson.
