CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The much anticipated snow will arrive today, but the accumulation will significantly vary throughout the Chicago area.
The heaviest snow bands will be south, according to AccuWeather. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Illinois counties such as Kankakee and Eastern Will and, in Indiana, Lake and Porter. The warning begins at noon and extends until 10 p.m. tonight.
AccuWeather projects rain will turn into snow by the mid-afternoon, and ultimately result in 3 to 6 inches for southern suburbs. Northwest Indiana could receive as much as 6 to 10 inches, AccuWeather says.
As for the rest of the Chicago area, the snowfall will be less eventful. A Winter Weather Advisory is in place, starting at noon, for counties such as DuPage, Kendall, Grundy, Central and Southern Cook, and Northern and Southern Will. City and nearest suburbs will most likely see 1 to 3 inches, AccuWeather predicts.
Suburbs north and northwest of Chicago look like they will be spared, receiving very little to even no accumulation.
Regardless of the storm’s variability, the afternoon commute will not be pretty. The wet, slushy snow will fall rapidly at times, creating hazardous road conditions. The NWS says gusty winds, ranging from 35 to 45 mph, will result in poor visibility.
