(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Catholic high school in west suburban Westchester that got national attention in the 1990s because of the movie “Hoop Dreams” is closing.
St. Joseph High School’s reputation as a basketball powerhouse was documented in the documentary.
But its principal, David Hotek, says that’s just part of the story.
St. Joseph’s is closing after 61 years and educating more than 11,000 students.
“It’s not so much the closing of a building that’s heartbreaking. It’s the students and what’s going to happen to them and our faculty, who now need to find other opportunities for employment,” Hotek said Tuesday.
“Those are the areas that are most concerning to me.”
Hotek says St. Joseph’s is closing because of declining enrollment and the inability to raise money to keep the school going during the pandemic.
