HIGHLAND PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Leaders in north suburban Highland Park are addressing concerns about what the new owner of Michael Jordan's former mansion plans to do with the property.
Real estate investor John Cooper bought Jordan's former home last month for $9.5 million.
Cooper is offering to sell timeshares starting at $1 million, giving investors a week's stay at the mansion each year.
The investors would also get to host events there, which concerns Highland Park resident Kevin Cullather.
“Events like weddings, family reunions, corporate retreats, sports watch parties, bar mitzvahs, and more, from my perspective, this is clearly a commercial venture within a residential neighborhood,” Cullather said.
Highland Park City Manager Ghida Neukirch tried to ease those concerns.
“If someone is having a wedding at their home or a birthday party, something like that, they don’t need special approval from the city, but, if they now are renting it out, where people can host a wedding there or a mitzvah or some other celebration or event, that would not be permissible,” Neukirch said.
Highland Park officials also said there is nothing illegal about selling shares in a private home, but they promise to make sure all owners of the mansion follow local codes.
