HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Highland Park City Council discussed at its meeting last night moving ahead with plans for a permanent memorial for the victims of the parade shooting.

Mayor Nancy Rotering warned members of the city council she expects it to be a very difficult process to determine the best way to honor the seven people killed and the dozens wounded.

"Everybody comes with their own experience and their own thoughts about what's the appropriate way to move forward," she said.

Much of the discussion was about how to ensure everyone gets to share their suggestions. The city is choosing to call it a "place of remembrance" rather than a memorial to stress the importance of those who were killed and honor the city’s resilience.
