HINSDALE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Suburban Hinsdale is putting restrictions on Airbnb's.
The Hinsdale Plan Commission is now requiring all short-term rentals have a minimum stay of 90 days. This means no weekend or even month-long guests and it’s one of the most restrictive ordinances of its kind.
The village say it wants to avoid problems that have occurred in other places with short-term stays such as incidents of rowdiness and big parties.
"I live next door to a house that was rented by the year and we had new neighbors every year from all over the world and they were delightful, but if they had come in every 30 days, it would be a different situation," said board member Jim Krillenberger.
Rental hosts are not happy. One host that spoke at the meeting manages at least two Hinsdale Airbnb's.
"I'm in full support of the current minimum 30-day rule," he said.
"A change in this rule will affect the current Hinsdale Airbnb hosts and much more importantly Hinsdale residents. Hinsdale residents that need temporary housing will not have any other choice but to travel to a different city for housing, or find a hotel, which is not sustainable long- term."
Because Hinsdale has good train transportation and tends of have a reputation for quiet neighborhoods, Airbnb and Verbo rentals have been popping up.
However, residents have been complaining about trash and noise.
