CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Although Christmas is still days away, the holiday travel rush is on. It is already evident at Chicago's two major airports.

Despite a rise in COVID cases, Chicago airports are packed with people headed out of town.

The Chicago Department of Aviation expects to welcome three million travelers to both O'Hare International Airport and Midway International Airport between now and Jan. 3.

O’Hare International Airport alone anticipates roughly 2.5 million people. That’s up 168 percent compared to the same two weeks in 2020.

Meanwhile, Midway will host 50 percent more passengers, with approximately 500,000 anticipated over the same time period, according to airline projections estimates.

The busiest travel day is expected to be Thursday, Dec. 23.

“There is no greater priority for us than providing a safe, secure, and reassuring airport environment for travelers and employees alike. We remind everyone to wear face coverings and social distancing where possible in accordance with federal law,” said CDA Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee, in a statement. “We are excited to welcome travelers to Chicago’s airports and help make it possible for families to gather for this holiday week.”

Those traveling are reminded to wear a mask at all times in both the airport and on the airplane; and give themselves plenty of extra time to get through the long lines at airline check-in, security screening and concessions.

To brighten spirits, the CDA said both Santa Claus and Buddy the Elf will be visiting O’Hare and Midway this week. Plus, both airports are sparkling with the holiday spirit, with festive holiday decorations adorning the terminals throughout the winter season.
