BATAVIA, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Catholic priest is defying the Rockford bishop’s order removing him as pastor of a west suburban church.
Fr. James Parker’s last day as pastor of Holy Cross Church in Batavia was Tuesday, according to the Rockford Diocese. The diocese said Parker was one of several pastor changes that are being made, although Fr. Parker is not being given a new assignment.
He contended in a note to parishioners that his term as pastor was “indefinite” and that Fr. Jared Twenty, who was assigned by Rockford Bishop David Malloy as Holy Cross’ parochial administrator, is free to pray at the church, but cannot usurp Fr. Parker’s authority.
Fr. Parker said he does not recognize Bishop Malloy’s appointment of Fr. Twenty and that he, Parker, remains pastor of Holy Cross Church.
The diocese said that even though Fr. Parker has not been given a new assignment, he was offered residence in the diocese, which the diocese said Parker turned down. The diocese also said Fr. Parker will continue to receive his salary and health insurance.
