CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — It’s called “Nothing But Crust,” and Home Run Inn, the legendary pizza chain, has announced it will be selling the product at Chicagoland Jewel-Osco stores.
The concept — to sell only crust and let customers build their own pizza on top — was tested in December 2022 and billed as a “Crust-mas Miracle” by the pizza company. Home Run Inn officials said the response was “overwhelming.”
“When we originally launched Nothing But Crust as a fun holiday promotion, it not only instantly sold out, the traffic to our online store was off the charts,” Gina Perrino-Bolger, the senior vice president of marketing and a fourth-generation family member of Home Run Inn, said in a press release.
Home Run Inn CEO Dan Costello told Crain’s Chicago Business that the December test-run was inspired by rising ingredient prices — tomato prices, alone, rose 40% in 2022, he said — as well as difficulties securing supplies.
Now, Nothing But Crust products are an official part of the Home Run Inn lineup.
Customers will be able to buy Nothing But Crust at participating Jewel-Osco stores, and they’ll be able to find suggested recipes on Home Run Inn’s website.
Although the recipes listed on the Nothing But Crust section of the website include traditional offerings, such as a tomato, spinach and garlic recipe called “Laura’s Favorite,” a couple other ideas skew toward creative desserts. The latter includes Spiced Apple Pie pizza and Strawberry Chocolate pizza.
The company claimed it is the only frozen pizza brand to sell nothing but the crust.
