CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Workers at several hotels in Chicago will not being going on strike, thanks to a new contract.

The agreement applies to hotel workers at Marriott, Hilton and Hyatt-operated properties who are represented by UNITE HERE Local 1.

According to the union, the new contract calls for a $25 minimum hourly wage for workers, who don't earn tips. It also preserves healthcare coverage for the workers and strengthens their pension.

“The raise to $25 per hour means I can quit my part time job and spend more time with my wife who is suffering from long COVID. Now, I’ll be able to tell her things are going to be okay and really mean it,” said Luis Cuevas, a kitchen steward at the W City Center who lives in Rogers Park.

The current contract was set to expire on August 31, so the union said the newly ratified contract averts labor disruptions at major downtown hotels.
