CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Even though Illinois' COVID-19 eviction moratorium ended on Sunday, the Lawyers’ Committee for Better Housing said there’s still hope for those worried about October rent.

“The most important thing for landlords and tenants to know is that rental assistance is available,” LCBH Legal Director Michelle Gilbert told WBBM Newsradio.

Gilbert said there are a number of programs at the state, county and city level that offer financial and legal aid.

“In the city of Chicago, a tenant could call 311 and ask for short-term help for housing, and they will be connected with a call center that can help get a rental assistance application started,” Gilbert continued.

Suburban Cook County reopened its rental assistance portal Monday morning, allowing landlords and tenants to apply for assistance.

Gilbert added anyone who’s received an eviction court summons can ask to speak with an Early Resolution Program attorney and receive free help.

“If an unrepresented landlord or tenant is in court today and they ask to speak to an ERP attorney, they'll be assigned to a breakout room and they can immediately consult with an attorney,” Gilbert said. “And those attorneys are able to help hook them up to the court based rental assistance.”
