(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A week after another driver’s license facility closed because of COVID, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced employees will have to prove they’re vaccinated or that they don’t have the virus.
The new requirement takes effect Sept. 1 at all SOS facilities, including the state library and Capitol building in Springfield.
Spokesman Henry Haupt on Thursday said employees have a choice: show vaccine cards or get tested every two weeks.
He didn’t know how many of the roughly 3,600 employees of the agency have already been vaccinated.
The agency issued a mask mandate for employees and customers last week.
The Deerfield driver’s license facility is slated to reopen Tuesday after a two-week shutdown that was sparked by an employee testing positive.
To combat long lines after other closures, White’s office has extended the deadline for renewing expired licenses to January and is expanding its appointment system to 16 driver’s services facilities by mid-September.
