(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The head of the Illinois Department of Public Health is keeping a close eye on COVID-19 numbers in the state as well as newly approved vaccines and when they may be available to residents.

IDPH Public Health Director Dr. Sameer Vohra says, like many other states in the country, Illinois is seeing a rise in COVID cases as summer comes to an end.

“We have been fortunate this summer in that COVID hospitalizations continue to remain down. They only account for two percent of total hospital admissions,” Vohra said.

The public health director is also expressing optimism about the FDA giving the green light to updated vaccines for the fall season.

“We are ready for those to likely be available starting next month.”

But, Vohra says just because Illinois will be prepared this fall doesn’t mean residents should ignore the dangers.

“We know from last year and two years ago that RSV, COVID-19 and flu can really get people sick as we go from summer to fall,” he warns.
