CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicagoans who were strolling through Daley Plaza on Wednesday had the chance to move to the front of the line for some important services from a special Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office.
People flocked to a blue truck at Daley Plaza, not for lunch, but to renew their driver’s license, or register to vote or catch up on something else.
Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias explained what his office has called the state's first “Mobile DMV.”
“When I ran for secretary of state, I promised that we would bring services directly to the communities, to the people, so I could not be more excited,” he said. “This is going to make a lot of people happy.”
Giannoulias said he’s already seen a lot of interest from residents across the state.
“Whether they’re senior citizens, whether they’re block parties, whether they’re small towns where it’s tougher to get to a facility,” he said. “This can cure a lot of these ills, and we can go directly into a community and service even more people, more efficiently.”
Amina Steward was among the first at the truck window on Wednesday.
“I actually updated my address, and I checked out my insurance — made sure everything with that was good — and my driver’s license was up to date,” she said. “I work right across the street, and when I came outside and saw it, I said, ‘Yes, this is what I need to do.’”
Also among those in line: Illinois State Rep. Janet Yang Rohr.
“I needed a real ID, and I thought, ‘This is a perfect opportunity to do it,’” she said.
The first Mobile DMV will serve Chicago and the suburbs, with three more coming for the entire state coming later in the summer.
