SPRINGFIELD (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Illinois Democrats are pushing a proposed child tax credit.
Under the proposal, joint tax filers would qualify if their income is below $75,000, for single filers, it would be $50,000.
"Families will receive (the credit) in cash, no strings attached, from the federal government to meet their immediate needs and put that money right back into the economy," said State Rep. Marcus Evans Jr. (D-Chicago) at a news conference.
"Sadly, Congress failed to make permanent the expanded child tax credit. This is why we are stepping up here in Illinois. We want to be the example for the nation," Evans added.
State Sen. Mike Simmons (D-Chicago) grew up poor and said he knows what it is like to repeat meals because the family could not afford a full round of groceries.
“One out of two children in the state of Illinois under the age of 17 would benefit from this legislation. (They) would suddenly be able to actually eat a full dinner,” Simmons said. And, I know from personal lived experiences what it’s like to go to bed hungry or what it feels like to have your grandmother put the same thing back out on to the table that you had for breakfast because we can’t afford to get a full round of groceries.”
