SPRINGFIELD (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A statewide drug education bill is now a signature away from becoming law.
It’s called the Drug Education and Youth Overdose Prevention Act, but it’s better known as Louie’s Law.
The legislation is named after Louie Miceli, a Medinah man who died at the age of 24 from a heroin overdose.
The bill, SB2223, would require the Illinois State Board of Education and Department of Human Services to create a comprehensive drug education and overdose prevention curriculum for the state's K-12 public schools.
The curriculum would be available by July of next year, but student participation would be optional.
The legislation passed the Illinois House and Senate and now awaits Governor Pritzker’s signature.
