(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Illinois lost nearly 33,000 residents between 2022 and 2023 while neighboring Indiana and Wisconsin saw modest population increases during a yearlong period, the U.S. Census Bureau says.
Illinois still holds its ranking as the sixth most populous state. But the headcount in the Land of Lincoln declined by 32,826 people -- to 12,549,689 -- from July 2022 and July 2023.
It's one of eight states to see its population decline over that year-to-year timeframe. Illinois trails only New York and California in total population decline.
By comparison, Indiana saw a population increase of nearly 30,000 to 6,862,199, according to Census data. Wisconsin saw a more modest increase of 20,412 people, for an estimated population of 5,910,955.
South Carolina's 1.7% growth rate topped all other states, as its population rose by more than 90,000 residents, thanks to domestic migration.
Florida had the next-highest growth rate at 1.6%, adding more than 365,000 residents. That was also the second-highest growth in terms of raw numbers. Only Texas surpassed it, gaining more than 473,000 people, according to The Associated Press.
More broadly, the United States added 1.6 million people, bringing the nation's population total to 334.9 million people.
