CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago election officials are hoping for a surge in voting for today’s primary election.

With numbers for early voting and voting by mail a bit on the low side, Chairwomen Marisel Hernandez of the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners is urging people to get out and vote.

“You are the only one that can make a difference. It’s the one place where a billionaire and the poorest person have equal weight, the vote,” Hernandez says.

She’s concerned, she says, about those who don’t believe in the integrity of elections.

“It’s very difficult to figure out how to overcome those lies and misinformation,” Hernandez adds.

Turnout in the city is expected to be under 50%.

“I hope people look around and see what’s happening, how issues are affecting them personally and that will motivate people to come out and vote.
