ILLINOIS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois has set a new record for COVID-19 cases as both Delta and Omicron variants spread rapidly. The state public health department recorded nearly 19,000 cases Wednesday.
The 18,942 confirmed and probable cases in Illinois is the highest since the pandemic began. The state’s weekly average number of tests conducted also hit a new high at just over 198,000. While 78 more people died from the virus, that’s a little more than half the daily total a year ago, when the vaccine had just been made available.
These numbers do not include at-home tests.
More than 71 percent of all Illinoisans have received at least one COVID shot and 64 percent are fully vaccinated, according to the state public health department. The state will not update numbers again until Monday.
