Illinois Department of Revenue reminds taxpayers to see if they qualify for state earned income tax credits

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The Pritzker administration is encouraging workers to file income tax returns to help claim nearly $30 million in unused credits.

If workers earned less than $58,000 last year, the Internal Revenue Service has suggested they file a return and use a calculator on its website to see if they can claim the federal earned income tax credit. If workers are eligible for that, they automatically qualify for the state credit. The average credit last year was $2,400.

However the Illinois Department of Revenue said more than 74,000 residents did not claim it last year.

Taxpayers with children could get refunds of up to $6,700.

Director David Harris said a family’s eligibility can change year to year, so he encourages workers to check their status.
