(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Those who buy legal marijuana from Illinois dispensaries are paying a lot more than those in other states.

Illinois has higher taxes – a 6.25% sales tax and an excise tax of up to 25% depending on the THC. Research by a company called Headset finds that the average cost is 89% higher than the rest of the country.

Michigan has a 10% excise tax and a 6% sales tax. The higher cost in Illinois is not hurting sales, though. The first six months of the year came in at more than $950 million.

The state is on pace to surpass last year’s record sales of $1.55 billion. Headset found that Illinois dispensaries have 118 brands. Michigan has about 800.

The sales figures put Illinois at number three, behind California and Michigan.
