(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Immigrant rights groups and Illinois' elected officials join together as the nation approaches another Trump presidency.

President-elect Donald Trump is promising a sweeping overhaul of U.S. immigration policy.

Gathered at Casa Michoacán in the Pilsen Neighborhood, elected officials joined the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights to solidify their commitment to helping immigrants across the state.

Dulce Ortiz, ICIRR's Board President, says the fight starts now.

"We are launching a community defense plan that starts today. We will build up our deportation defense infrastructure through a series of public Know Your Rights trainings, bolster the defenses we already secured to protect our people, further restricting data sharing with ICE and develop a rapid response infrastructure throughout the state. "

The plan is to build up the deportation defense infrastructure, bolster defenses already secured to protect immigrants and further restrict data with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

ICIRR is also calling on lawmakers to resist the president-elect's agenda.

"The drop of water broke the rock. Not because of its strength but because of its consistency. And we are all of those things. We are strong. We are consistent and we are resilient," Illinois Senator-elect Graciela Guzman said.
