CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — India is experiencing a devastating second wave of COVID-19, with reports that many are dying simply because they cannot get access to medical care.

Here in Chicago, there are efforts to help.

Dipti Desai, of Wheeling, has family in India. She is a co-coordinator of the Chicago chapter of Sewa International USA, a humanitarian organization trying to raise $5 million for the nation. In five days, she said, they’ve raised just over $4 million.

One of the group’s immediate goals is to send 2,200 more oxygen concentrators to India.

“It is very, very hard to find hospitals which will take the patients,” Desai said.
“Even if they do get admitted into the hospitals, they do not have oxygen.”

She said she feels fortunate to be able to help from overseas — up to a point.

“At the same time, not being able to be with my family — support them morally or financially — it’s just, it’s just hard,” Desai said.
