Indiana's attorney general is suing Chinese-owned social media app TikTok, citing inappropriate content and concerns about security, especially related to its younger users.

Attorney General Todd Rokita announced two separate lawsuits against TikTok — both related to false claims made by the company about its video-sharing app.

Attorney General Todd Rokita's first suit claims the platform misleads its users, especially children, about the level of inappropriate appropriate content. The second lawsuit asserts that TikTok has reams of highly sensitive data and personal information about Indiana consumers and has deceived those consumers to believe that this information is protected.

Rokita said while the social media video app says it's safe for users 13 years and older, the app contains salacious and inappropriate content available to young users.

“In multiple ways, TikTok represents a clear and present danger to Hoosiers that is hiding in plain sight in their own pockets,” Rokita said. “At the very least, the company owes consumers the truth about the age-appropriateness of its content and the insecurity of the data it collects on users. We hope these lawsuits force TikTok to come clean and change its ways.”

TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company that moved its headquarters to Singapore in 2020.
