(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Construction workers who were rehabbing a building in the Indiana Dunes National Park have discovered a time capsule from 1941.
It was an unexpected find, according to the National Park Service, which described it as a “heavily oxidized and sealed copper box.”
It was found behind the cornerstone of a building called the Good Fellow Lodge. The building was once part of a summer camp for the children of steel workers.
Inside the box was a piece of folded, tar-infused construction paper, within which other items were wrapped inside. Among them: a small, silk 48-Star American Flag that was wrapped around several paper documents, including a memorandum, a speech, a deed, and newspaper articles from 1941.
The memorandum opens: “On this day, January 18, 1941, Mr. E. Earl Moore, Vice President in charge of Industrial Relations, Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation, laid in place the last stone forming the foundation wall.”
It goes on to describe the camp.
The park service said it is planning to put the items on display. See more images from the find below:
