(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The electric utility servicing Northwest Indiana is asking for a double-digit rate hike.

The Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) said in a regulatory filing, it’s asking for a 22% rate hike.

It would be phased in over the next two years, if approved. The average monthly bill would go up by about $30.

Rates were hiked by 10% over the past two years.

The company said, in a statement, "Our request is largely driven by our investments related to renewable energy along with infrastructure upgrades to provide enhanced safety and reliability."

The utility is transitioning to wind and solar power generation and away from coal. Its massive generating plant on the lake in Michigan City is being closed.
