NDIANAPOLIS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Indiana lawmakers are considering the use of speed cameras near schools.
The proposal from state Rep. Blake Johnson, a Democrat from Indianapolis, would allow counties and municipalities to contract with speed camera companies and install cameras within a half mile of schools.
Fines would be $250 for going one mile an hour over the limit.
Failure to pay within 30 days would result in the suspension of a vehicle registration.
And the registered owner would be on the hook, whether they were driving or not.
Johnson said, according to the Times of Northwest Indiana,
"We have a very clear solution to a problem that's plaguing all of our communities,” Johnson said, according to the Times of Northwest Indiana.
Another proposal would allow speed cameras in work zones.
