SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A book has been returned to a library in South Bend that’s been overdue for more than a half a century.
The book Sir Gibbie arrived in the mail, but River Park Library manager Joe Sipocz had never heard of it.
"It was pretty neat, and then after all that was done, I had to go look and see, I thought I had never heard of this book, what is this book? So I looked it up and saw we don't have any copies anymore, and now we do, or we're going to have one," Sipocz told WSBT-TV in South Bend.
"Sir Gibbie" is an 1879 novel by the Scottish author George McDonald, a rags-to-riches story.
The book turned up in a library in California and was sent back from the there without a note. It's not known where the book has been for 53 years as the original due date was June 21, 1968.
Sipocz also told WSBT-TV that it was returned just before the library plans to do away with late fees.
The fine in this case would not be more than the cost of the book, but if the daily fees were added up, it would comes out nearly $4,000.
