SOUTH BEND, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Northwest Indiana man who survived six days trapped in his wrecked pick-up under an I-94 bridge in Portage is now in rehab and looking forward to what comes next.
Matt Reum was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend where he was initially in critical condition with injuries that were considered life-threatening. He’s still there, but improving, he said in a video he posted on social media.
“I’m now walker-bound, and I have a wheelchair, and I’m able to get around, which is amazing,” Reum said. “I never thought that at 27 I would have to start worrying about how do I get around…There are so many things we take for granted in life.”
Reum had part of a leg amputated and has broken bones.
He said an online fundraiser will help him with the next chapter of his life.
He can’t thank people enough.
"Being able to be the beneficiary of this, I almost feel, unwarranted love breaks my heart every time I start thinking about it because you guys have made what was and is a tragedy for me, and you have showered me with love and you have shown me so much kindness."
