(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Two teachers and two teachers aides have lost their jobs at an elementary school in Brownsburg, Ind., after a child with disabilities was forced to eat his own vomit.
It happened in the lunchroom at Brown Elementary School, according to investigators, and it was caught on videotape.
The child was 7 years old.
“What happened at Brown Elementary is the worst treatment of a student by individuals given a responsibility to provide care,” district Supt. Jim Snapp said during a school board meeting.
A teacher allegedly told the boy that if he were to throw up, he would have to eat it. Both she and an aide stood on either side of him, and they made sure that he did.
Three others failed to report the incident. In the end, three people were fired, and one resigned. A fifth was an outside contractor.
Parents spoke during the meeting.
“How could that many people willingly participate in such a horrible thing and not report it,” asked one.
CBS 4 Indianapolis reported it was two months after the incident when the principal was made aware.
All five of those involved now face criminal charges.
The staffers were identified as: Life Skills teacher Sara Seymour, 27, who was terminated; Life Skills instructional aide Debra Kanipe, 63, who was terminated; Life Skills teacher Julie Taylor, 48, who resigned; Life Skills instructional aide Kristen Mitchell, 38, who was terminated; and Meghan King, a 24-year-old registered behavioral technician working for Kids Count.
