(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Indiana State troopers say a social media post helped them find a dog that was in danger on a flatbed trailer being pulled along the Borman Expressway this week and identify a man suspected of putting the dog's life at risk.

Someone posted a video on Facebook showing the large tan and black dog that appeared to be in distress while riding unsecured on the trailer in freezing temperatures near the Illinois border.

After getting a 911 call and seeing the video, detectives immediately started looking for the dog.

Indiana State Police Sergeant Glen Fifield said the dog was found in Gary, near a home where the owner of the vehicle pulling the trailer had previously lived.

Fifield says the dog is doing well with a foster family.

“It is being cared for in a foster home. It's receiving great attention, you know, love, attention, food, pets, hugs, all that kind of stuff. He's in a good place,” Fifield said.

Fifield said “this is a feel good story”.

“It's definitely rewarding, and I know all the officers that were involved in this care about this dog. You could see in the video that has been circulating online of, you know, shows the compassion state troopers have, but I think it just shows the compassion, I think in general that law enforcement has.”

State troopers say they've asked prosecutors to charge a 37-year-old Lake County man suspected of pulling the trailer with animal cruelty.
