(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A northwest Indiana man is charged with an act of animal cruelty after video of a man harming a dog went viral.

Chicago police say 28-year-old Jose Orlando Cartagena of Hammond is charged with one misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals.

He was arrested after a video was widely shared on social media after being posted by CWB Chicago.

According to the news outlet, the woman who provided the video said the incident happened in Lincoln Park on Sept. 22.

In the video, a man driving a distinctive minivan can be seen opening the hatch and violently pulling a white dog out of the back by its collar and slinging it onto the street.

He is later captured on camera beating the dog on the head.

According to CWB, Cartagena was arrested Sunday after a woman recognized him in the lobby of an animal hospital on the North Side, and police were called.
