(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Leaders of an Illinois school district say they are investigating a former top administrator after a police report claims he stole from his mother.

The former Chief Operations Officer for the Rockford School District, who recently resigned from a position with the Elmhurst schools, is due in court next month. He and his wife are facing charges for allegedly swindling his mother out of tens of thousands of dollars, according to police.

Todd Schmidt, 56, and his wife Rita, are accused of stealing about $170,000 from his mother, Josephine.

Charges include aggravated identity theft and financial exploitation of an elderly person.
She’s in her eighties.

There were also alleged to be forged student loans.

A police report obtained by Patch says Schmidt took over his mother’s finances in 2018 after the death of his father.

Police started investigating last year.
