
(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Illinois state troopers are mourning the loss of one of their canine partners.
The Illinois State Police announced that K-9 Riggs passed away unexpectedly at the age of 10 following a cardiac event.
The police dog had a long list of accomplishments during his eight years of service.
They include helping his human partners seize nearly 500 pounds of cocaine, more than 200 pounds of heroin, nearly 300 pounds of methamphetamine, more than 2,000 pounds of illegal marijuana and nearly 100 guns.
The Illinois State Police said Riggs helped disrupt the flow of illegal drugs and dismantle drug trafficking organizations.
