(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is not heading to the U.S. Southern border – at least not in the near future – but is sending a delegation to examine the migrant crisis there.

Johnson said he still wants Chicago officials to see for themselves how asylum seekers continue to be sent by bus and planeloads to Illinois. The influx has threatened to overwhelm city resources.

Ald. William Hall, 6th, said he’s honored to be part of delegation. They are hoping to get a variety of perspectives.

Johnson said he himself is staying in Chicago to deal with making room for asylum seekers here. He has said he hopes to see better coordination between border states and Chicago.

Jason Lee, senior advisor to Johnson, said the mayor intends to visit the U.S. Southern Border at a later date.
