(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Brandon Johnson has rolled out a new initiative that is supposed to streamline the development process in Chicago.

The Chicago Cultural Center was packed with businesspeople, developers and others who nodded as City Chief Operating Officer John Roberson said it takes too long to get building permits as a time the Johnson Administration is trying to revitalize LaSalle Street, among other corridors.

So, city officials have crafted some 100 recommendations for hastening permits, reviews, inspections, payments and more. The top change is a new director of process improvement.

“Processes that have taken nine months – our expectation is they can take three months, or six months can take less,” Mayor Johnson told reporters. “Some of these processes that have taken years, we want to cut that down considerably.”

Developers who weighed in Friday said cutting the red tape will cut their costs -- and frustrations.
