(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago police union will have to wait until Monday to see if its latest challenge to the city's vaccine mandate succeeds.
That's when a Cook County judge is expected to rule on the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7’s request for a temporary restraining order.
Attorneys for the FOP said officers will suffer irreparable harm if the city is not stopped from enforcing the mandate.
And Joel D'Alba on Thursday told Judge Raymond Mitchell that under the police contract officers must have a hearing before they can be put on “no-pay” status.
A city attorney said 31 officers have been placed on no-pay status for failing to share their vaccine status with city government
FOP president John Catanzara said he was hoping Judge Mitchell would granted a TRO right away.
“The courts operate at their own pace and we’re okay with that. We’ll see what happens Monday.”
City attorneys say there has been steady compliance since the mandate took effect, but Catanzara estimates about 3,000 officers still are not vaccinated — a sign he said shows the union's strength.
