CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - There is an end in sight to our week-long heat wave.

Today should be the final day of extreme heat and humidity, AccuWeather says. Today’s high temperature is forecasted to be 96 degrees. Pair that with bright sunshine and high humidity, conditions could once again be dangerous.

An Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. for Grundy, Kankakee and Southern Will Counties. The National Weather Service says peak afternoon heat indices could reach as high as 115. Those working outdoors or participating in outdoor activities are at great risk for heat related illnesses.

For other areas, such as McHenry, Kendall, Southern Cook, Northern and Eastern Will Counties in Illinois as well as Lake and Porter Counties in Indiana, a Heat Advisory remains in place until 9 p.m. Friday. The NWS says it could feel as hot as 110 in those areas.

In addition to the heat, an Air Quality Alert also has been issued for the entire Chicago area until midnight, with Canadian wildfire smoke resulting in unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has declared today an Air Pollution Action Day. The NWS says children, adults with respiratory issues such as asthma as well as older adults are advised to limit physical, outdoor activities.

The good news: Relief from the heat is on the way. AccuWeather says several strong thunderstorms will arrive late this afternoon or in the early evening. These storms could potentially be severe, containing damaging winds, flash flooding and even hail. Most importantly, though, they will bring cooler air. Temperatures will drop to near 70 and humidity will decrease.

The weekend is shaping up to be rather delightful. Tomorrow will be sunny with low humidity, AccuWeather says, with a high of 81. For Sunday, the sunshine returns as well as comfortable temperatures.
