(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A Cook County jury on Tuesday evening convicted a man of shooting and killing Chicago police officer Ella French and injuring her partner in August 2021.

Twenty-three-year-old Emonte Morgan was convicted of killing French, seriously injuring Carlos Yanez Jr. and shooting at a third police officer during a traffic stop on the city’s South Side.

The jury deliberated only a few hours before convicting Morgan of first-degree murder, attempted murder of a peace officer and possession/use of a firearm as a felon. He faces a possible life sentence.

"We are incredibly gratified by the jury's verdict today, but it is difficult to feel anything other than sadness about the senseless murder of a Chicago police officer killed in the line of duty," Cook County State's Attorney Kimberly Foxx said.

French and Yanez were fired upon after they stopped an SUV with expired tags in Englewood.

Morgan’s brother, Eric Morgan, pleaded guilty in October to charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, battery and obstruction of justice. He was sentenced to seven years.

A third man, Jamel Danzy of Hammond, Indiana, was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison last December after pleading guilty to a federal firearms charge for making an illegal straw purchase of the handgun used to kill French.
