(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Ald. Patrick Daley Thompson has been convicted on seven counts of bank fraud and filing false tax returns.
A federal jury deliberated for less than three hours Monday, WBBM Newsradio Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports.
Thompson, 52, was accused of misrepresenting the amount of money he borrowed from the failed Washington Federal Bank for Savings and claiming mortgage interest deductions when the loan wasn’t a mortgage.
The attorney from Bridgeport is the nephew of former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and will be sentenced in July.
The most serious counts carry a maximum prison sentence of 30 years. His lawyers will surely ask for probation.
Thompson’s daughter began to sob in an overflow courtroom before the verdict was even read. Her cries grew louder as she heard the news, and she eventually had to leave. Thompson’s remaining family members in the overflow room huddled together.
Under state law, as a convicted felon, the 11th Ward alderman must resign his position on the Chicago City Council. Mayor Lightfoot will have 60 days to appoint a successor.
Two other sitting aldermen face federal charges.
