More volunteers needed for kids in need as child abuse cases surge in Kane County

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The pandemic has lead to a surge in child abuse cases in Kane County and that means the need for more volunteers for kids in need.

"Our new cases have about doubled since the pandemic," said Jennifer Fisher with CASA Kane County, a nonprofit that serves children who come into juvenile court due to abuse or neglect.

Fisher said cases in Kane County are at an all time high and now they have a desperate need for volunteers.

"There is absolutely no legal background needed. Our volunteers are everything from doctors to retired grandparents to anything. There's absolutely no special background needed. We will give you the training that you need," Fisher told WBBM Newsradio.

Fisher said there are several reasons for the uptick in abuse cases such as increased stress on families during the pandemic and economic conditions. And now that kids are back in school there are increased reports and more eyes on these kids.
