(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Kane County States Attorney’s office is calling on people facing relatively minor arrest warrants to come to Elgin Branch Court on Friday for a way to get out of being put behind bars.

“The idea is, in these lower-level cases, chances are the judge would recall the warrant, anyway,” State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser said. “We can either try to resolve it or set it over for another day.”

The first amnesty opportunity was last Friday, when one person showed up. This person was not arrested, Mosser stressed.

“Based on the fact that it was just a failure to appear, the warrant was recalled by the judge, and it was actually set over another day so that it could be resolved,” the prosecutor said.

She said she hopes people with outstanding warrants will be less skeptical about the offer because of this example.

“Unfortunately, the social media response has been more mistrustful,” Mosser said.
