(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Kane County sheriff is stepping up his criticism of the state’s new ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Sheriff Ron Hain said last month he would not proactively seize guns banned under the law from legal owners unless they are committing crimes. This week he told the Kane County Board that lawsuits over the ban -- and the SAFE-T Act, which would end cash bail in Illinois -- could have been avoided.

He says Democrats in the Legislature are not listening to those who must enforce the law.

The sheriff, a Democrat himself, contends the ban will make communities less safe and that mental health is the biggest contributor to mass shootings.

The ban is on hold, amid court challenges. It does not cover weapons and accessories bought before the law was approved.
