HOBART (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A man has died and a woman remains in critical condition after their kayak overturned on a Northwest Indiana lake, about 40 miles from Chicago.
Indiana Conservation Officers said witnesses saw a 19-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman from Dyer kayaking on Robinson Lake in Hobart when their boat tipped over. The kayakers began struggling, witnesses said, and at around 8:15 p.m. a 9-1-1 call was made.
Officers said one witness went into the water attempting to rescue the man and woman. While trying to rescue them, both went under water, the officers said, and the witness was able to pull the woman to safety. The woman was then transported to St. Mary’s Hospital and is still in critical condition.
The male kayaker, however, was not able to get back to the surface and did not survive. A little after 9 p.m., his body was recovered by a Crown Point Fire Department diver, officers said.
According to authorities, the kayakers had life jackets on board but were not wearing them when the boat flipped.
