LAKE COUNTY, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A rookie K-9 with the Lake County sheriff’s office upstaged the veteran dogs with two arrests in 24 hours.
The 2-year-old German shepherd named Ryker, one of five Lake County Sheriff K-9’s, has been on the job for about two months.
His busy 24 hours included tracking a suspect who ran from a stolen car about a mile to the door of a motel room.
Ryker's loud and imposing presence also convinced a man wanted on a domestic violence warrant to surrender during a barricade situation.
"I'll tell ya none of us want to get by by one of our K-9's from what we hear from individuals who are apprehended by our canine teams," said Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.
"They generally 99 percent of the time surrender, because they don't want to get bit either."
Covelli also said police K-9's are a costly tool, but every penny, as they tend to neautralize threats and often finding missing and endangered people.
