CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A warehouse on the city's Near West Side went up in flames Saturday night.
A massive plume of smoke could be seen coming from the roof of the building on the 2500 block of West Fulton Street after the fire started around 9 p.m.
The Chicago Fire Department reported difficulty in getting the gas company to shut the gas off at the time. CFD called it a stalemate at that point as the water from their hoses could only keep the gas fueled fire from spreading further.
While multiple parts of the building had already collapsed, at about 4 a.m. People's Gas succeeded in shutting off the gas, allowing the firefighters to finally strike out the fire.
Chicago Fire officials said the warehouse was filled with heavy equipment and copper. Part of the building's roof caved in. No injuries were reported.
