Today is the last day for Cook County residents to apply to be part of the guaranteed income pilot program.
More than 200,000 people have submitted applications for a lottery that will choose
3,250. Those who get in will receive $500 a month for two years.
To be eligible, household income has to be at or below 250% of the poverty level or
about $45,000 for a family of two, about $80,000 for a family of five. Roughly one-third of Cook County residents are eligible.
The program is being funded with federal COVID relief money.
"Cook County is reframing the way we think about government assistance,” County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said when the program was announced.
