(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An Illinois state senator is sharing more details of her recent carjacking experience.
State Sen. Kimberly Lightford was with her husband at the time. He exchanged shots with at least one of the carjacking suspects.
The incident occurred in the 2000 block of South 20th Avenue in Broadview around 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Broadview police said three masked suspects in a Durango SUV “hijacked” the Mercedes Benz SUV belonging to Lightford.
The couple was dropping off a friend in the western suburb when they were ordered out of their Mercedes SUV at gunpoint.
“I begged them not to shoot us, and I begged them not to shoot my husband, not to shoot me. I told them to take whatever they want,” Lightford told CBS 2 on Thursday.
“They took everything off me that I had of value, and I offered the car, and my husband slid them the keys.”
At that point, Lightford said her husband – who has a concealed carry license – told her to run.
“I ran reluctantly, because I didn’t want to leave him there. And it was a scary run, because now shots are being fired. I thought for sure they were going to shoot me down. So it was difficult,” Lightford said.
Broadview police said that multiple gunshots were fired, but no one was hurt. The stolen vehicle was later recovered on the South Side of Chicago, though no arrests have been made.
Lightford expressed gratitude that she and her spouse were physically unharmed.
“I am trying to process the trauma of what happened. I want to thank everyone who has offered their love and support,” she said in a statement issued Wednesday.
