Lawmaker proposes crackdown on AI-generated telemarketing

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The use of Artificial Intelligence by telemarketers worries a member of Congress from the North Shore.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky said AI is helping some telemarketers make far more robocalls.

And she said the technology can be used to trick people into thinking they are talking with a real person, rather than a machine.

She has introduced legislation that would require telemarketers to tell people upfront they are talking or texting with an AI bot.

Schakowsky said her bill would double the penalties for telemarketers if they violate federal rules by using AI to trick people into thinking they are communicating with a real human.
